May 09, (THEWILL) – An Owerri-based businessman, Mr Christian Nwachukwu, has decried the high level of violation of traffic rules in Owerri by motorists, especially the commercial ones, urging the State government to create motor parks across the metropolis, with a view to addressing the menace.
Nwachukwu, attributed the traffic jam in Owerri, the state capital to illegal pick-up and dropping-off of passengers at junctions by the bus drivers in and urged the government to step in and stop it
In an interaction with THEWILL, recently, Nwachukwu expressed worry that the only functional public motor park in the Owerri municipality was Arugo park, located along Owerri-Onitsha road, adding that there was need to create another one.
“The number of commercial buses operating in Owerri is on the rise on a daily basis. It is saddening that there’s no functional park here in our State. Those bus operators plying Obinze, Nworieubi, Akabo-amanwozuzu, Emekuku and other suburbs, should have a designated park where they should drop passengers than Douglas road.”
While applauding Governor Hope Uzodinma for the landmark projects in Imo State, he implored him to direct the relevant agencies to curtail the nuisance on roads being constituted by some drivers and touts.
Nwachukwu further appealed to the Governor and Commissioner for Transportation, Hon Rex Anunobi, to see how they could tackle the issues which, he said, were causing gridlock on the major roads of Owerri.
Several efforts made to reach the Transportation Commissioner, Hon Anunobi, at his office at the State Secretariat, Owerri, proved abortive, as his aides said he was busy and could not talk to the Press.
