This weekend, Taylor Swift brought her show-stopping Eras Tour to Nashville, Tennessee. To say it was a big weekend would certainly be an understatement. On night 1, Taylor announced that her third re-recorded album, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) would be coming out on July 7 of this year. Night 2 was all fine and good, but night 3 — the final night of her tour in Nashville — almost didn’t happen at all. Shortly before one of Taylor’s openers, Gracie Abrams, was set to take the stage, the crowd was rapidly evacuated from the stadium due to a lightning storm in the area. Fans were told to shelter in place in the lobbies inside, in covered or partially covered areas outside, or in their cars until the lightning ceased. To pass the time, many fans livestreamed their experiences of the event on Instagram or TikTok, while others took to joining in a mass Swiftie sing-along. Currently a lightning advisory here in Nashville at the Taylor Swift show. 2 weeks ago I was in Oxford when Morgan Wallen had no voice and canceled. Next month I’ll probably have tickets to U2 and things get delayed because of a swarm of locusts. pic.twitter.com/gew041VWwA — Mark Nagi (@MarkNagi) May 7, 2023 Fans waited for four hours, uncertain whether the concert would actually go on as planned. While Taylor herself commented and assured those waiting that she did plan on performing, mother nature certainly seemed to have different plans. I’m going to be honest with you — watching this all play out on various attendee’s livestreams, I did not think this concert was going to happen. Spirits were high, but the weather did not look like it was letting up, and the blare of the stadium’s warning system was not reassuring. But four hours later, crew members could be seen preparing the stage outside, and eventually, fans were given the all clear to re-enter the stadium. Taylor finally took the stage around 10 pm Taylor addressed the situation on stage, telling fans, “We’ve been waiting hours to play for you. You’ve been waiting for hours. The mutual love between us right now!” She continued, “You waiting and doing that for us…it’s making me feel fantastic, Nashville!” Before performing “Lover,” she elaborated, “There is one thing you can absolutely not plan on, and that is the weather. So, I wanna say… the fact that we had chaotic weather and you decided — all of you — to stay here and count on the fact that we were gonna play the show no matter what — that means the world to me and everyone on this tour. Thank you!” While the openers were cut and it continued to rain throughout the night, Taylor Swift performed her entire, 3 and a half hour set with no cuts or adjustments. Her performance ended just after 1:30 in the morning. I think it’s safe to say Taylor Swift is “the show must go on” personified. Here’s to wishing her her and all the wonderful folks at the concert last night a restful and dry Monday!
