The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali, has affirmed that the Force will not tolerate any threat to Nigeria’s democracy. Speaking at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, he stated that the May 29, 2023, handover date is sacrosanct, and the Police will crush any attempt to derail Nigeria’s democratic process.
According to the IGP, the Police and National Intelligence Community are closely monitoring the activities of political elites and other elements who are working to subvert Nigeria’s security interests. It has been observed that some major political actors who lost in the 2023 General elections have been issuing public threats directed at frustrating the Presidential inauguration ceremony.
The Nigerian Police, along with other security agencies and the intelligence community, are closely monitoring the activities of these political elements. IGP Alkali has made it clear that it is the right of aggrieved political actors to submit grievances on the electoral outcome to the judicial process for consideration. He emphasized that the hallmark of a true democrat is measured by their level of patriotism and willingness to comply with the rule of law, peace, democratic values, and the judicial process.
The IGP stated that the public utterances of some political actors and their attempts at inciting public protests ahead of the Presidential Swearing-in ceremony are subversive, undemocratic, and unconstitutional. He warned that individuals with subversive agendas, regardless of their political affiliations, who engage in acts that threaten Nigeria’s democratic and security interests, will face the full wrath of the law.
The Police Chief reassured citizens that the democratic and political order remains firm and unwavering. He rallied citizens to resist any attempts by political elites to manipulate their political passions, urging them to go about their lawful businesses and freely participate in the inauguration ceremonies.
The Police have acquired adequate assets to guarantee citizens’ protection during the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony. IGP Alkali implored citizens to report any attempts by misguided political elements to infiltrate their ranks and engender political tension in the country.
In summary, the Police Chief emphasized that the Police’s constitutional mandate includes the security governance of the processes leading to the inauguration of elected candidates and the guarantee of successful inauguration events. Nigeria’s democracy is sacrosanct, and the Police will defend it at all costs.
