Former CAN President Sunday Mbang Dies at 86

The Christian community in Nigeria is mourning the loss of Sunday Mbang, the former president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and prelate emeritus of the Methodist church.

Mbang, who was also the first black president of the world Methodist council, passed away at the age of 86 on May 16.

In a letter to the church, Babatunde Taiwo, the secretary, announced the death of the revered cleric and expressed condolences to his family and the people of Akwa Ibom, his state of origin.

Mbang was a trailblazer in Nigerian Methodism and scored many firsts during his leadership.

He will be deeply missed by the Methodist Church and the entire Body of Christ in Nigeria and beyond.

Mbang was born in Idua Eket, Eket LGA of Akwa Ibom on August 26, 1936, and received his theological education and training in Nigeria and overseas, including at the University of Ibadan, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Harvard University.
