Michigan basketball’s hopes of bolstering their depth at point guard have taken a hit with the reported decommitment of Caleb Love. Love had committed to transferring to the Wolverines after a successful stint in North Carolina and was highly rated as the No. 16 transfer available this offseason by 247 Sports.
In his final season with the Tar Heels, Love averaged 16.7 points, 2.8 assists and 3.7 rebounds in 35.7 minutes per game, including stellar performances in North Carolina’s NCAA tournament run to the final. However, Love is a high-volume scorer and needs the ball often, averaging 15.1 shots per game last season, although shooting just 37.8% overall and 29.9% on three-pointers.
Despite Love’s decommitment, Michigan still has some depth at point guard with Jaelin Llewellyn and Dug McDaniel both returning. Llewellyn, a transfer from Princeton before last season, suffered a season-ending ACL injury in December 2021 but has since undergone surgery and received a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA to return for the 2023-24 season. McDaniel, a true freshman last season, became a starter after Llewellyn’s injury and ended the season with strong performances, averaging 13.8 points, 3.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.3 steals over the Wolverines’ final eight games.
Additionally, Michigan is set to add Nimari Burnett, a transfer from Alabama, as well as guard George Washington III from the class of 2023, Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year last season. However, Llewellyn is yet to return to full strength, as he revealed on the Defend the Block podcast this week.
Michigan will be hoping to fill the void left by Love’s decommitment and continue their upward trajectory under coach Juwan Howard. Tony Garcia, a Free Press sports writer, contributed to this report.
