I did not issue any form of threat to Peter Obi, says Edo Governor, Okpebholo

By EMMANUEL JIMOH, Benin –

Edo State Government has responded to misinterpretations surrounding Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo’s remarks on Mr. Peter Obi’s planned visit to the state.

In a statement, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor emphasized that Okpebholo did not issue any threats to Obi.

“It is imperative to state clearly that the Governor did not issue any form of threat to Mr. Obi” he said.

Rather, the Governor highlighted the importance of high-profile individuals notifying and seeking security clearance before public engagements in the state.

As the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, Okpebholo emphasized his constitutional responsibility to safeguard lives and property.

“As the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, it is the Governor’s constitutional responsibility to safeguard the lives and property of all residents and visitors alike”.

The statement noted that ignoring security protocols creates vulnerabilities, particularly in today’s volatile security environment.

Okpebholo’s concerns are driven by the rising attacks and abductions of religious leaders.

“In today’s volatile security environment, this wisdom cannot be overstated”.

The Government urged leaders to align with security protocols and realities, rather than twisting the Governor’s concerns for political mileage.

He said: “The State Government will not fold its arms and allow politically motivated activities to endanger lives”.

Okpebholo’s administration is committed to addressing insecurity and ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all.

“Governor Okpebholo is committed to a safe and inclusive Edo State for all”, he said.

The statement concluded by emphasizing the importance of responsible governance and coordination in ensuring security.
