Ferrari’s Formula 1 struggles continued onto the football pitch as Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz both suffered embarrassment in a charity football match.

The annual World Stars game takes place at Monaco’s Stade Louis-II every year before the Monte-Carlo Grand Prix, and has featured a number of motorsport legends including Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel.

This year’s edition saw both Ferrari drivers line-up, along with their fellow competitors Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly, while F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali even put on his gloves in goal.

The famous faces didn’t stop there though, with tennis great Daniil Medvedev on the opposing team, along with former Southampton and Leicester manager Claude Puel.

The away ‘Team Children’ charity side led 1-0 at the break, but the match ended up being a 3-3 thriller with Sainz scoring two to help the F1 Drivers Team secure a comeback.

Real Madrid fan Sainz is known to be exceptional at golf and padel, and he didn’t look out of place on a football pitch either as former AC Milan and Inter striker Giampaolo Pazzini assisted his goals.

Sainz was later seen with strapping on the bench a few days before the race
The only downside for Sainz was an apparent injury picked up during the match, with photographers capturing him on the bench with heavy strapping on his thigh, while he was seen grimacing after the game was over.

Ferrari will be hoping any pain doesn’t hamper Sainz’s Monaco Grand Prix preparation days later, with the track known to be one of the most demanding on the calendar as cars are pushed millimetres from barriers.

For his teammate Leclerc, things didn’t go so well, with the Monaco native kept off the scoresheet, and even hilariously faceplanting shortly after coming on, which soon became a meme online.

Posting the image on Instagram, Leclerc wrote: “I’ve got a natural talent at football that very few have.”
