May 11, (THEWILL) – In a tightly contested Europa League semi-final, Roma emerged victorious with a valuable first-leg win over Bayer Leverkusen, courtesy of Edoardo Bove’s decisive goal.
The match began with Leverkusen testing Rui Patricio early on, but their chances went unrewarded as Florian Wirtz and Robert Andrich failed to capitalise on promising opportunities.
Roma appeared to take the lead in the 18th minute when a free kick found Roger Ibanez, whose powerful header from close range was rightly saved by Lukas Hradecky. However, it was the homegrown talent, Edoardo Bove, who eventually broke the deadlock.
Bove bypassed a defender in midfield before setting up Tammy Abraham for a shot on goal. When Hradecky parried Abraham’s effort, Bove was alert and fired in the rebound. Roma continued to threaten, with Hradecky denying Andrea Belotti and Bove narrowly missing out on converting the rebound with an acrobatic attempt.
The game had its share of tense moments, including a collision between Rui Patricio and Roger Ibanez, leaving the Roma goal unguarded. Fortunately for Roma, Bryan Cristante displayed quick reflexes and cleared Jeremie Frimpong’s shot off the line with a desperate stomach block.
Looking ahead, Roma is set to face Bologna for their next encounter in Serie A, while Leverkusen will take on VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.
