May 23, (THEWILL) – The fight to avoid relegation from the EPL is reaching its crescendo, with three clubs desperately scrapping to secure their top-flight status.
While Southampton has already been relegated to the Sky Bet Championship next season, the fates of Everton, Leicester, and Leeds, hang in the balance as the campaign approaches its dramatic finale.
Everton, currently sitting in 17th position with 33 points and a goal difference of -24, have a straightforward equation: they must win to ensure their safety, irrespective of other results. Anything less than a victory could prove catastrophic. A draw would open the door for Leicester to surpass them on goal difference if they secure a win. Meanwhile, Leeds could also overtake Everton on goals scored with a victory by three or more. However, even in defeat, Everton would escape relegation if both Leicester and Leeds fail to secure victories.
Leicester, in 18th place with 31 points and a goal difference of -18, have a simple but daunting task ahead: they must secure a victory against West Ham. Even then, their fate might not be sealed. Leicester’s survival also hinges on Everton’s result. If Everton were to lose, Leicester would remain in the Premier League by a single point. A draw for Leicester at Goodison Park, resulting in a better goal difference than Everton, would also secure their safety.
As for Leeds, currently in 19th place with 31 points and a goal difference of -27, a win is imperative. However, even a victory might not be enough for them to avoid relegation. Leeds would need to hope for both Everton and Leicester to stumble. If Everton were to draw, Leeds would have to make up three clear goals to leapfrog them. Additionally, Leeds would require an extraordinary goal swing, given their nine-goal deficit, to surpass Leicester if the latter manages to defeat West Ham.
