Kwanthanze High School might be a volleyball giant but not many Kenyans are aware of its ties with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Gachagua disclosed on Sunday, April 16, that he worked as a tutor at the Machakos County-based learning institution.

He revealed the details during a church service at Kenyatta Stadium and attended by President William Ruto.

The former Mathira Member of Parliament (MP) left the crowd in stitches when he divulged that he used to earn Ksh1,210 monthly for his services.

“As the deputy governor has stated, I am one of your own. Many years ago, I used to be a teacher at Kwanthanze Secondary School. I had just completed my form six studies awaiting to join University.

“We used to earn a monthly salary of Ksh1210. It was a lot of money then. We used to buy jeans and went to the disco using that cash,” he narrated.

The father of two and a career public servant added that he was the one who started the volleyball program at the School.

“It is true I am the one who started that school volleyball team in 1984. And I am so proud that they have achieved that kind of success.

“So I will speak with my boss, if there is a way we can help that school, we shall do so,” commented Gachagua.

Kwanthanze has been unmatchable in recent years, bagging title after title at both the national and international levels.

Some of its products have played for the national team Malkia Strikers and featured for top clubs around the globe.

Malkia Strikers’ reliable hitter Sharon Chepchumba, Esther Mutinda, Gladys Ekaru, Lorraine Chebet and Immaculate Nekesa are some of the famous players who schooled at the reigning East African champions.
