“My boyfriend, at the time, in an attempt to hug me from behind, brought out a frantic reaction that shocked him. This kind gesture sent my heart racing, forcing me to curl into a corner to soothe myself back to normalcy,” she told TUKO.co.ke. Sharon disclosed that her breakdowns became more apparent with increased intensity, making her lose her bearing.

At the time, she didn’t think much of what was happening to her and carried it as a normal life occurrence.

It was not until she was about to graduate that part of the curriculum expected all the psychology students to attend therapy that she discovered she suffered from chronic anxiety.

“Walking down memory lane during therapy, I realised that my anxiety’s root cause was things out of my control. Therefore, managing the triggers would be the heavy lifting in my recovery. After noticing the various symptoms, I intentionally began looking for activities that would calm me down. I now listen to soft music and take walks to calm me down when I feel unreasonably anxious,” she said. Sharon now volunteers at Basic Needs Kenya in campaigns like Speak Up to share her story of dealing with anxiety to help others deal with this silent and often disregarded mental illness.
