The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the attempted assassination of its candidate for the upcoming November 8, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State, Chief Jude Ezenwafor. According to reports, he was ambushed and shot at by gunmen in Abuja while returning from an appointment.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP described the attack as a politically motivated plot by desperate individuals unsettled by Ezenwafor’s rising popularity.
“After a critical analysis of the violent incident, the PDP believes that certain interests who, ostensibly being uncomfortable with the growing popularity of the PDP candidate ahead of the November election are desperate to prevent him from participating in the coming poll,” the statement said.
The opposition party also disclosed that it had received intelligence on other schemes aimed at tarnishing the image of its candidate through orchestrated smear campaigns.
“Our Party has also been made aware of other plots by some anti-democratic elements in Anambra State to commence a series of smear campaigns against our candidate following the failure of the assassination plot,” the party added.
Describing the attack as a reflection of the country’s deteriorating security situation, the PDP blamed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for what it called “overtly insensitive, corrupt and abysmally rudderless” leadership.
“This attack on the PDP candidate is another sad commentary on the alarming level of insecurity in the country under the overtly insensitive, corrupt and abysmally rudderless All Progressives Congress (APC) administration,” the statement read.
The party, however, declared that the attempt on Ezenwafor’s life would not deter its resolve, nor would it stop the candidate from contesting and winning the election.
“In any event, our clear message to the assailants and their sponsors is that they have and will continue to fail in their evil machination as the PDP candidate is divinely destined. Our candidate enjoys the support of the people and will surely emerge victorious in the election,” it stated.
The PDP called on the Inspector General of Police to arrest the attackers and their sponsors and ensure the safety of its candidate ahead of the election.
“Our Party charges the Inspector General of Police to immediately apprehend the assailants and their sponsors while also beefing up security around the PDP candidate ahead of the election.”
Encouraging Ezenwafor to remain undeterred, the party reaffirmed its confidence in winning the election and leading Anambra with a people-centred agenda.
