May 01, (THEWILL) – PSV Eindhoven successfully defended their Dutch Cup title on Sunday, with a 3-2 shootout win over rivals, Ajax Amsterdam, after a lacklustre 1-1 draw in the final at the Feyenoord Stadium.
Fabio Silva scored the winning penalty for PSV, who claimed back-to-back wins in the competition having beaten Ajax in the 2022 final as well.
The shootout was underwhelming and reflected the rest of the game, as Ajax missed three of their kicks while PSV capitalised on their chances. Jarrad Branthwaite’s own goal gave Ajax a first-half lead, but Thorgan Hazard equalised for PSV in the second half to send the game to extra time and penalties.
Calvin Bassey was a late second-half substitute but it was Brian Brobbey, Jurrien Timber and Edson Alvarez, who missed their penalties for Ajax allowing a grateful PSV to claim their 11th Dutch Cup victory. This triumph leaves them nine trophies behind Ajax’s impressive record tally of 20 titles.
The match was marred by Branthwaite’s unfortunate own goal, but PSV’s determination paid off in the end as they secured another trophy to include in the growing collection in their trophy cabinet.
