Award-winning actor Tom Hanks has revealed that he believes an AI version of himself could feature in movies long after his death. Hanks explained in an interview with “The Adam Buxton Podcast” that thanks to AI and deep fake technology, he could be recreated at any age and his performances could go on “and on and on”. Although he acknowledged that people would probably be able to tell the difference between the real Hanks and a digital version, he questioned whether they would care.
Noting that discussions were taking place about how an actor’s likeness and movements could be protected as intellectual property, Hanks suggested that he was encouraging movie agents to “write contracts to protect actors’ likenesses”. The actor’s likeness has previously been recorded for use in the 2004 film “The Polar Express”. He added that AI was likely to shift the issue of intellectual property away from the content of films and towards the performers who feature in them.
The actor is currently promoting his debut novel, “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece”. The book has received mixed reviews, but Hanks has defended it, stating in an interview with the BBC that it will “live and die based on its own ability to entertain and enlighten an audience”.
