Tom Hanks is one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood, with a long list of films to his name including Cast Away, Forrest Gump, and Turner & Hooch. However, it seems that Hanks isn’t content with simply making movies while he’s alive, as he’s now claimed that he could continue to appear in films long after his death with the help of AI.
In a recent interview on the Adam Buxton podcast, Hanks spoke about the possibilities of artificial intelligence and how it could be used to create new films featuring him long after he’s gone. “Performances can go on and on and on and on,” he said. “If I wanted to, I could get together and pitch a series of seven movies that would star me in them, in which I would be 32 years old from now until kingdom come.”
It’s an interesting idea, but one that many in the industry are skeptical of. While deepfake technology has come a long way in recent years and is being used in more and more films, the idea of using it to create entire movies from scratch starring actors who are no longer around seems like a stretch.
Still, Hanks seems convinced that it could happen. He points to the CGI film The Polar Express that he made with director Robert Zemeckis in 2004 as evidence that technology will continue to advance and that AI could eventually be used to make films in this way.
Whether or not it will actually happen remains to be seen. While the idea of “digital immortality” has been explored in films like Black Mirror and Upload, the practicalities of creating a movie in this way are complex and expensive.
For now, we’ll have to be content with watching Tom Hanks in his current and upcoming films. But who knows? Maybe someday we’ll be able to enjoy new movies from him even after he’s gone.
