Nigerian students and other nationalities studying in the UK will be subject to new immigration restrictions that will prevent them from bringing their families with them.
This new prohibition on bringing family members over will be made public this week and will apply to all master’s students as well as many other post-graduates.
Although, PHD students, whose programs typically last between three and five years and require high levels of skill, are exempt from the restrictions.
This new restriction was put in place as a result of Tory MPs asking Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to take action and curb the rising numbers after net migration to the UK reached 1 million.
However, UK ministers will be announcing the immigration restrictions in order for Rishi to take charge and reduce the soaring numbers, on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Rishi will make a public appearance and highlight the benefits of the new restriction.
Rishi is aware that more and more people are coming to the country and using a relative’s student visa as justification for staying.
Additionally, according to Rishi, students in general brought 135,788 relatives to the UK in 2022—nine times as many as in 2019—and 59,053 Nigerian students alone brought more than 60,923 relatives
