WhatsApp rolls out feature to allow users edit messages up to 15 minutes after sending

WhatsApp has announced the addition of an editing function allowing users to alter messages up to 15 minutes after they have been delivered.

The Meta-owned messaging service has begun rolling out the editing function globally, and it should be available to all users in the coming weeks.

Before this, the only way to fix a wrong message was to delete it and send a new one, with recipients seeing the statement “This message was deleted” in place of the message.

In a similar fashion, messages that have been amended will have an “edited” notification next to them, but users won’t be able to see what the initial message said before it was edited.

To use the functionality, hold down on a message and pick “edit” from the pop-up menu that appears.

“We’re excited to give you more control over your chats, from correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message. All you have to do is long-press on a sent message and select ‘Edit’ from the menu for up to 15 minutes,” WhatsApp explained in a blog post.

Competing apps like Telegram and Signal already allow users to edit messages, while Twitter gave select users the option to edit tweets last year. Subscribers to Twitter Blue have access to an editing option.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s founder and CEO, announced the WhatsApp adjustment on his Facebook page, showing a message that had been altered from “Beast of luck!” to “Best of luck!”

About a decade ago, Meta’s Facebook began to push out the option to modify posts and comments. Instagram, another Meta social media platform, allows users to modify posts, not comments.
